“I started Port Medical with the goal of treating every customer like I would want to be treated. That’s still true today.”

Dean Crassas

PRESIDENT

It could be said that Dean Crassas comes by his business acumen naturally, a potent combination of nature and nurture that paved the way for his entry to the entrepreneurial world. As the son of a shipping and freight executive who was also a consular diplomat, Dean was exposed to the intricacies of international enterprise from a young age and witnessed his parents’ interactions with heads of state and titans of business industry, in both formal and informal settings. But it would be more accurate to credit Dean’s decades of hands-on experience in the maritime industry, which fueled his ascent from a summer job in the warehouse of Atlantic Steamers Supply--his family’s maritime wholesale business--to the top levels in that company’s management hierarchy.

As his experience grew, so did his reputation for results and his track record of success. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, this future CEO relocated to New York City, then on to New Orleans, San Francisco, Long Beach, and back to Houston, assuming command of various operations, staff training, sales, and marketing roles in some of the largest port cities in the US. He navigated his family’s business through daunting times and remained in command as the various principals retired or passed away.

Brief sojourns into large market media sales and the petrochemical arena offered fresh perspectives on the business climate. When presented with the chance to handle Houston-area sales for a New Orleans-based company, Dean took on the role of sales director, supplying medicine and medical supplies directly to shipping companies. It was here that Dean’s finely-honed observational skills led to the “aha!” moment that inspired the birth of Port Medical Management.

Dean’s conversations with ship owners and agents revealed a common, if not universal, complaint: sourcing and providing dependable medical care for foreign crewman was time consuming, complicated, and exceptionally expensive.

Seeking to fill that need, Crassas worked to create a new service model that would streamline and accelerate the process while managing the expense of the treatment and care.

In 2005, Dean Crassas opened the doors of Port Medical Management, operating from Houston, Texas and servicing the needs of ships in port throughout the Gulf Coast. The company quickly earned a global reputation for exemplary service to seafaring workers while directly addressing concerns of the ship owners and their agents. Port Medical’s seamless execution of the entire process includes priority appointments, expedited diagnosis and treatment and, most important to those who fund these efforts, simplified and transparent billing.

In the years since its debut, Port Medical Management’s service portfolio has expanded, as has its reach and operations team. Their quick and decisive action helped their clients weather the COVID-19 storm and introduced Port Medical to a growing list of clients around the world. The company that Dean Crassas founded 18 years ago is now equipped to service ports of call on all three US coastlines.

Dean Crassas remains at the helm, directing Port Medical Management’s operations to ensure the exemplary level of service that has become his company’s trademark.
